Name
Excellence in Engagement: An Evaluation of Exemplar NAMI Affiliates
Description
An external, multidisciplinary evaluation team from the University of Iowa conducted an evaluation with six NAMI affiliates, each selected for their excellence in engaging diverse populations and innovative strategies to outreach. Evaluation participants included leadership, staff, volunteers, community partners, and recipients of NAMI services. Through collecting and analyzing multimodal data from virtual semi-structured small group interviews, a virtual community conversation, and surveys, the evaluation team (a) developed the R.E.S.T. theoretical framework to guide future NAMI affiliate work (Reimagining Access, Connection, Engagement, Empowerment, and Equity; Envisioning the Horizon: 360 Transformational Leadership; Stabilizing the Pulse of NAMI: Elevating Volunteers; Transforming Community Buy-in: Building a Sustainable Roadmap for Meaningful Engagement); (b) identified multisystem barriers (e.g., navigating stigma) and facilitators (e.g., rebranding mental health outreach and supports), and (c) translated affiliate input and feedback into actionable guidance across 6 core areas: (1) public approach to mental health , (2) cultural responsiveness, (3) workforce development, (4) community outreach and engagement , (5) curricula and content, and (6) capacity building. This session will focus on the methodology of the evaluation process, lessons learned, and how to apply these findings to affiliate-level strategic planning, implementation and evaluation efforts moving forward.
