Kellan McNally, MSW, MA, is a PhD candidate in social work and anthropology at Wayne State University. His research focuses on employment exclusion and economic participation of people with psychiatric disabilities, with attention to how mental health systems and related policies shape access to paid work. He is currently reproducing and analyzing archival photography from U.S. state asylum and hospital reports that documented the unpaid labor of patient-workers. His dissertation will focus broadly on contemporary social enterprises, including arts-based studios and galleries, as sites of vocational and career development for disabled artists with histories of psychiatric treatment. Since 2023, he has served as a Graduate Research Assistant to Dr. Amy Watson on national projects examining community behavioral health crisis response and crisis workforce development. Kellan maintains clinical licensure and works as a therapist, with prior roles in psychiatric emergency services, community crisis programs, and outpatient behavioral health settings.
