Kern F. Vanderburg currently is active in recovery advocacy, education and peer support in the Houston area. Kern serves as the SEA Center and Warmline Manager for NAMI Greater Houston. Beginning in 1987, he went from a political activist to addressing the vital social issue of chemical dependency in the criminal justice system. With this aim in mind, he became a CADAC/LCDC to develop the first drug and alcohol program in Texas for the Travis county jail in Austin, Texas. Additionally, he went on to create workbooks and training workshops dedicated to providing resources and coordinated efforts nationally to treat dual diagnosis/chemical dependency through community-based organizations and the criminal justice system.
