Mental health policy is shaped not only by legislation, but also by the advocates who influence priorities, tell stories, and decide which voices are brought into the room. As communities grow more diverse and needs more complex, advocacy must evolve to better reflect and serve those who have historically been underserved. This session explores how advocacy practices shape policy outcomes by bridging community experience and systems change. Participants will examine how advocacy can better serve people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, rural communities, young people, and those affected by education, child welfare, and the criminal legal system. The discussion highlights practical approaches rooted in relationship-building, cultural humility, accessibility, and community trust. Attendees will leave with ideas for strengthening advocacy in ways that are more inclusive, responsive, and effective.
